Adjusting a coupling on a over centre handbrake for Knott and al-ko brakes for trailers and Caravans
In this video we explain how to set the coupling on a trailer or caravan after the wheels have been adjusted.
This is the final part of setting up the brakes and should only be done once the hubs have been adjusted and all the brakes have been inspected for items that are not functioning correctly.
For more information on adjusting and inspecting the brakes on a trailer see our other videos.

      @TowingAndTrailersLtd Місяць тому

      Hi Thankyou for watching This can vary and needs doing based on distance and time if a trailer is used a handful of times a year and short distances it needs doing once or twice a year. if its used regular for short trips every month this would be the same for occasional long trips. for people that are intensively using such as car transporter companies that do 500 miles every day its recommended every week. We do have a recommended maintenance schedule on a website we had for information this was written in 2012 and staff from Knott and Bradley looked over this and agreed this can be viewed at. www.uk-trailer-parts.co.uk/trailer-servicing-maintenance-schedule/

    Excellent video, thanks for doing this. I have towed many a large load but usually dead loads like aggregates, building materials etc. In the next couple of weeks am going to tow a large 4x4 on a transporter trailer for about 150miles. Will have your guidance here in mind. Only thing i’m nervous on is weight distribution. Am planning on sending it slightly nose heavy but it is hard to tell as cars are unevenly distributed. I guess i will find out how much sway i get in the first couple of miles. Thanks again 👍🏼 Edit: just saw your other video pop up on even loading, again very useful, thanks. Think i’m just going to put it slightly forward, maybe just an inch of the central point on the trailer and take it from there. Am also going to be putting as much from the payload vehicle into the tow vehicle like seats etc as am close to the trailer’s gross capacity. All the best.

    Thank you. I was driving today 400km in the outback and smelled a burning smell at the caravan wheel. Felt it was burning hot 🥵🔥 that's where I realised I'd adjusted not long ago but only a few clicks tighter and the wheel was spinning fine with slight brake noise. I ended up adjusting it back off about 20 clicks and it's cool now but still makes that slight dragging brake noise. Don't know why this might be because on all accounts it should be silent at this rate?

    • @TowingAndTrailersLtd
      @TowingAndTrailersLtd 5 місяців тому

      Hi on European trailers / caravans with brakes since the mid to late 80's you are not supposed to have a safety chain. with experience forgetting to take an handbrake off on a caravan and testing brakes on trailers with a car I think it would slow quickly not come to an immediate stop. I do agree if people are not paying attention it could cause an accident but it will no out brake a car. This will only happen on a well serviced trailer. it does worry us how many trailers we see that would not stop at all if they came off.

On the www new bolts are available and they all have red loctite pre-applied. If they have loctite on.... how is it possible to adjust as you say? Surely the adjustment should be done via the domed cable adjustment nut? Many thanks again, great channel.

    • @TowingAndTrailersLtd
      @TowingAndTrailersLtd 8 місяців тому

      Hi The Loctite is blue on all Genuine Knott Adjusters the ones you have seen on line are probably copy / None genuine products. We only stock Genuine Equipment when it comes to brakes as over the years we have seen many problems with copy equipment. I have seen copy equipment brake drums and bend backplates so the slight saving you have can cost an axle. The loctite is to create some resistance not to lock the adjuster so the adjustment is just a little stiff. You should never adjust the brakes on the cables as this opens the expander. if the expander is open you have less travel for your brakes and the force as the force the cables apply is also at its maximum as the cable is pulling straight backwards rather than at an angle. Hope this helps Towing and trailers ltd www.towingandtrailers.com

      Glad it helped We use a paraffin based solvent but in the early days we would use diesel but it was smelly many company's are using a water based cleaner. any thing will do than thins the grease to clean it out. Most auto spares shops will have some sort of degreaser like your no nonsense degreaser you mentioned. I would avoid brake cleaner as you will need a lot and it could get expensive but it would work. Hi The over centre handbrake that is operated by a large spring (energy store) has been around since the 80's Bradley moved over to this fully in the 90's Knott moved over to it soon after but there were still couplings around with ratchet handbrakes (not usually used on new production trailers) until about 15 years ago. This video was filmed in 2019 and the al-ko coupling that is shown on the left seems to be disappearing now as when we order it we are getting couplings in some weights that have an over centre handbrake that is slightly different as the energy store ( spring) is mounted under the main body and does not stick out of the back. I think in the next year or 2 you will not see any couplings (new stock) available with a ratchet handbrake. there may be the odd new coupling left that has been sat on some ones shelf. Hi I don't Know why disk brakes are not widely used but I do understand that there are some developed. I like the click type but other people use them and I know that the digital ones will not be left with torque wound on them damaging mechanisms. I can also hand it to any one they don't need to be able to read a micrometre style gauge to set it a digital wrench. If I am doing something I often have people come to me asking Questions this can distract me and the counter that the digital wrenches have is handy to see where I have got to. The wrench I don't like is the one that flexes I specifically brought the one in the video to do the filming and once it was filmed I gave it away as I don't trust it for use in our workshop. Going to be honest you lost me the minute you started torquing a wheel that is not on the ground.

      Hi I know that it is not a done practice to torque a wheel in the air. When I have serviced a trailer I always check the brakes and leave them locked in the auto reverse position. I then torque the wheels this gives me an Idea that the brakes are working well. The wheels then settle and are torqued when the trailer is collected by a customer as a final check. @@TowingAndTrailersLtd It is also not a safe practice for you as that is a good way for something to fall from a lift or jack

      I understand what you are saying if it is not securely supported We do make sure that trailers are secure while we work on them. The trailer in the video was on more than suitable axle stands. When a trailer is serviced with sealed bearings or a stub axle is fitted you are applying 280 - 850Nm to the same area on a trailer. If it is safe enough to tighten one of these it can manage a wheel stud / nut at 60 - 195 Nm Hope this helps Towing and trailer ltd www.towingandtrailers.com
